Featured Santa Cruz California
Real Estate Agent
Santa Cruz is a beautiful place. Some may say that is an understatement, with the nearby cities or communities of Live Oak, Capitola, Rio Del Mar all challenging in their own ways, Santa Cruz real estate has a variety and beauty to offer any buyer. Santa Cruz California is a place that grows on you and has visitors worldwide. I am always amazed when I travel and people and people ask where I am from, I say Santa Cruz, California, and they know where I live.
Located ninety miles south of San Francisco and 45 minutes from Silicon Valley, Santa Cruz is close to commerce and culture, yet, feels miles apart. At the northern end of Monterey Bay, it is a home to great surf, sailing, agriculture and many other things. On the southern end of Monterey Bay just 45 minutes away you find the communities of Monterey, Carmel, Pebble Beach, and then the Big Sur Coast.
Santa Cruz has an interesting history that stretches from the time of the Spanish and the Padres to various immigrant waves shaping the area. Santa Cruz real estate early on consisted of large ranchos as the Mexicans owned all this land we call home. The large tract of Live Oak real estate was part of the Rodriguez rancho. Santa Cruz has long has an affair with the sea, though much of its early bounty came from its great redwood and oak forests. Much of the lumber of the fine home on the west coast from San Francisco to Seattle and south came from these mountains.
The San Lorenzo Valley has a number of communities, which mostly owe their heritage to lumber, though Ben Lomond Mountain was the source of Henry Cowell’s vast fortunes as limestone became the prime component in the new construction material, concrete. Many people made their livelihoods in Santa Cruz from cement, and one of the major plants still operates up in Davenport. Today the San Lorenzo Valley communities of Boulder Creek down to the foot of the valley where Felton, Zayante and Lompico are, are thriving little mountain communities each with a history.
People originally came to Santa Cruz attracted by the beauty of the bay. The sea was plentiful with fish back then and a source of commerce. Today there is a lot of sailing, some fishing, marine laboratories, whale watching, and sailing and fishing charters, to help the locals and tourists enjoy the Santa Cruz area. The Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor is the focal point for most of the latter activities.
While the name Santa Cruz is generally applied to the whole area, there really are many different Santa Cruz neighborhoods in East Santa Cruz and in West Santa Cruz. As the eastside Santa Cruz area grew to meet the Westside Santa Cruz “town” one does not recognize the dividing line, the San Lorenzo River as more than just that, a river. In fact the Santa Cruz downtown and Pacific Garden Mall have been shaped by the river.
The Holy Cross Church on Mission Hill was one of the original missionaries’ settlements and provided a refuge from the periodic floods from the river, before the current levee was built. The local Ohlone and Coastanoan and Zayante Indians all lived a peaceful plentiful life here and were incorporated into the lives of the Spanish Padres who, after the Indians, settled the area in the early 1800’s. While Santa Cruz was chartered as a city in 1850, along with the State of California, the roots of the people here were not drawn by gold, but other riches of the soil. Santa Cruz County real estate is a fertile growing area. With vast tracts of coastal redwoods, and oaks these resources were initially was overlooked in favor of the rich agricultural land.
The Pajaro Valley still continues to have most abundant and diverse farming in the area. With beautiful areas such as Corralitos, Amesti, Freedom, Larkin Valley, Day Valley and many others, there is a diversity of crops from wineries, apples, strawberries, flowers and many organic farms that call these areas home. The diversity of real estate choices in Santa Cruz is staggering, with Santa Cruz ocean view homes on the bluffs, to Rio Del Mar beach front homes, to the striking and silent beauty of Pajaro Dunes. Choices of homes in the Santa Cruz mountains range from places with vast ocean views to ranches, homes on the sand, small Seabright beach cottages, homes in Boulder Creek in the majestic towering redwoods to mini mansions in Scotts Valley or golf course homes in Pasatiempo Golf Course.
While many think of Santa Cruz as a surf spot, more think of it as a hip beach town, with a top notch University of Santa Cruz providing part of its diverse employment base.Santa Cruz has some great beach houses with modern architectural tour de force designs as well as old iconic Victorians that grace the cliffs in Capitola.
