Pleasure Point is a surf and beach neighborhood in the Live Oak area of East Santa Cruz; it has been so since the early part of the century. While surfing came to Santa Cruz in the 1800’s and later more popularized with Duke Kahanamoku of Hawaii, Santa Cruz probably got its’ first significant surfing going in the 30’s. It wasn’t until Jack O’Neill developed the wetsuit in the late 50’s that the area started having a draw for surfing. Pleasure Point is undeniably one of the more consistent surf breaks in Santa Cruz County. Read more of the fascinating history of Pleasure Point and its later development as a vacation home spot. Until then Pleasure Point had been a emerging beach home spot, and not a surf spot. The real estate was cheap, so people starting building as there was a big beach. I suspect all that changed once the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor was developed and the tidal sand deposition was altered. I have heard that before there was much development, that it had been fields of artichokes. Most of the homes were smaller cottages as was the case for most beach homes at the time. If you look at the photo on my Opal Cliffs real estate page, you will see the Pleasure Point area was much more developed than Opal Cliffs. These were secondary places that one went to, to escape the summer heat of the valley. They were functional and inexpensive. I recall old neighbors telling of how their parents bought lots for $1500, others for $500. No one wanted to lots at the cliff as they would erode and fall into the cliff, people wanted to stay back. So much for that thinking now! Pleasure Point is a full time neighborhood of people who love the water and the beauty the area affords. In Pleasure Point you will find beach homes, beach cottages, and precious little land to build on. More of these smaller old homes are making way to beautiful luxury homes of people who love to surf and the relaxed lifestyle by the water. In most of Pleasure Point you are only about a 10 minute walk to the water. Call me, Gregg, to see this laid back beach area at 831-818-7524 Visit my Santa Cruz Real Estate website.
