The Belle Meade plantation was owned by General William G. Harding. In 1883, the General gave 2600 acres of the Belle Meade Plantation to his daughter Mary and her husband U.S. Senator Howell Edmunds Jackson. They also bought an adjacent farm, joining the two, and built their home. They chose to call their estate West Mead. It continues to thrive today as a community within Nashville that’s close to the great shopping in Belle Meade and Green Hills.
