Green Building in Austin, Texas

Thinking green has become the new gold standard for green building in Austin, Texas. Located just three miles from downtown Austin and two miles from The University of Texas at Austin, an ambitious effort is underway to redevelop Robert Mueller Municipal Airport into a mixed-use urban village that will bring new hope to a neglected part of Austin.

The Mueller project is perfectly positioned to become an energetic new hub for central Austin. The transit-oriented design of this new community includes a broad range of homes plus places to shop, dine, jog, bike and play. When complete, Mueller will have more than 10,000 residents, 10,000 jobs and 140 acres of green space. It has been chosen as the site for the 2009 Austin Parade of Homes presented by the Home Builders Association (HBA) of greater Austin.

Mueller residents will enjoy a lifestyle full of choices that won't involve getting in their cars. Mueller’s parks, trails and open space weave through the community, establishing a native, local eco-system that will bring outdoor recreation and education options to the residents, employees and neighbors of this new eco-centric community.

In fact, some 20 percent of the neighborhood will be dedicated to parkland and open space, and every resident will live less than 600 feet away from a community green space.

The 711-acre Mueller site, vacated when Austin's airport relocated in 1999, is well on its way to becoming home to approximately 10,000 people, 10,000 permanent employees, and 10,000 construction jobs.  Besides the 140 acres dedicated to public open space, there will be:

 * 5 miles of new hike and bike paths.

 * 4,600 single-family, condo or apartment homes.
      (25 percent reserved for affordable housing.)

 * A town center with cafes, shops, plazas and live/work spaces
      (30 percent locally-owned businesses.)
             - Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas (open)
             - The University of Texas Medical Research Campus
             - Austin Film Studios (open)
             - Austin Children's Museum (opening soon)

This should become a community "gold standard" that will bring together the efforts of some visionary citizens with extensive goals towards housing and economic planning for Austin.
