Not to be confused with the Township of LangleyThe City of Langley separated from the much larger Township of Langley and incorporated on March 15, 1955. Historically, the Langley Prairie, as it was know then, developed in a much more urban manner and had much different needs than the rural area.
The Langley Prairie quickly became the commercial and business hub of the area. The residents however felt that the much larger Township had much more political prowess and this lead to dissent and ultimate separation.

The City is located south of the Fraser River and north of the Canada-U.S. border. It is approximately 10 sq. kilometers in size and shares its western border with Surrey and the rest with the Township of Langley.
