Colorado Golf Courses and Golf Communities

Don’t Think of Golf When You Think About Colorado? You may want to think again. I understand, when someone says Colorado, you probably think  about Colorado's world class skiing and rightfully so. The Colorado Rocky Mountains, just a short drive up I-70 from the Denver area feature some of the best skiing in the world. Now I’m going to let you in on a little secret…Colorado and the Denver metro area are home to some wonderful golf courses as well. Colorado’s golf courses and the real estate in the surrounding communities cover a broad range of eras, prices and styles.

Traditional

Many of the more centrally located, long-standing courses and clubs feature lush, parkland style designs that many would consider “traditional” layouts. The real estate and communities around these courses are typically very-well established, as they tend to be located well within the metropolitan area.  Below is a picture I took of Lakewood Country Club, which gives a good example of my idea of a Parkland or Traditional course.

High-Plains, Links & Hybrids

Along with the real estate boom of the ‘90s, Colorado saw a big increase in the number of courses built. As the real estate development expanded the Denver suburbs, new golf courses followed suit and expanded Colorado golf enthusiasts’ options. Many of the new courses took a different path than the traditional courses. Architects began developing Links courses, High-plains and hybrids of almost any style you can think of. The end result left Colorado with a several wonderful new suburban communities as well as a vastly improved golf landscape that offers a varied selection of high quality courses and course styles.  Many of the courses and homes along the eastern part of the metro area feature spectacular panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains to the west.  I took the photo below standing on the No. 2 Tee of Murphy Creek, which is a good example of a newer, east-metro, links style course.

Mountain & Uniquely Colorado Golf Courses

For those unfamiliar with Colorado it would help to have a little primer of sorts regarding the topography. Bear with me, as I have to generalize a bit here – Starting east of the Denver metro area, you have vast rolling plains, stretching as far as the eye can see (home to many of the Links & High-Plains style courses). Moving into Denver and its suburbs, things green up a bit, there is a distinctly more urban feel (Denver is a large city!) and you find many more of the Traditional-style courses described above. To the south and west (but still relatively close to Denver), you start to see courses and communities built around natural landscapes and scenery you won’t soon forget and that are distinctly Colorado. Bluffs, mesas, foothills and massive red rock formations that seem to spring out of nowhere, there’s a little of it all here. Some of Colorado’s best courses and communities incorporate the state’s natural beauty in awe-inspiring fashion. Mountain-style courses and what I will call “Uniquely Colorado” courses, or courses that blend both together, offer a twist to the great game of golf and a challenge you can find few other places. The photo below of Fossil Trace Golf Club in Golden, shows a good example of modern course architects taking full advantage of Colorado's unique terrain. Notice the mesas in the background and the elevation change from the tee box to the fairway. This photo was taken in the late fall/winter (yes there is late fall & winter golf in Colorado!)

Now you know the secret. Colorado is a wonderful environment for golf and provides a wide range of course types. And we covered all this without even mentioning the “true” mountain-style courses located in the high-country. Whether you’re a purist or someone who embraces new twists on old loves, Colorado has it covered when it comes to golf. The vast range of course styles and ages also reflect the varied Colorado golf real estate communities surrounding the different courses and clubs.

Golf for many is about lifestyle. Colorado has many wonderful options to suit whatever your image of the golf or luxury lifestyle may be, from affordable starters to high-end luxury course-side residences.
