Chicago is a city of inspired pragmatists; we dream big, and we deliver.

Our city rose from the ashes of a devastating 1871 fire, rebuilt by a mix of architects, business people and entrepreneurs from Chicago and around the world. We hosted two of the greatest World's Fairs in history, the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and 1933 Century of Progress, attracting over 75 million domestic and international visitors. In 1958, Chicago was the first United States city to host the Pan-Am Games. Pierre de Courbertin, the founder of the Modern Olympic Movement, said this about Chicago when he visited in 1893, "It is stirred by noble sentiments and pursues its moral perfection. In a word, it is rising."   ----  Today, we continue to rise. Our latest achievement is the creation of Millennium Park , a dramatic new green space that was built over a vacant rail yard. Our dream now is to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games and to strengthen the Olympic Movement.

Chicago offers a magnificent backdrop for athletes to compete and spectators to cheer them on in the heartland of America . We are a city that prides itself on achieving harmony between our lakefront, our 29 miles of shoreline parks and the city itself. It is all part of a design that was developed back in 1897 and one that still guides our planning today. By placing these games in the very heart of our City, we will give our global guests the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the downtown parks and lakefront, and offer Athletes from around the world a compelling and unique experience.

The City's extensive rail, transit, and motorways infrastructure, combined with the world-class O'Hare and Midway International airports, makes Chicago one of the most accessible cities for local residents and International visitors
