Top 10 Tips for Remodeling and Home Improvements

If you are thinking about a remodeling project or are perhaps just considering ways to lower your electric bill by making small home improvements, all the available options now being discussed in the media may seem a bit overwhelming.  As “green” issues have become recently in vogue many people are holding themselves out to be experts and the array of recommendations and sources of information have grown considerably. 

To help remodelers, whether homeowners or contractors, make decisions that will actually make a proven difference in terms of energy efficiency and natural resource conservation, the Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH) recently issued a “Top 10” List for Remodeling.  PATH, which is a joint venture between various leaders in the homebuilding industry and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), is a recognized source for reliable, trustworthy information related to housing technologies and materials.  

The PATH “Top 10” focused on the following areas to determine its list: quality and durability; energy efficiency; environmental performance; safety and disaster mitigation; and affordability.

Here is the list:

2. Smart-Vent Ventilation/ Ventilation Control System

3. HVAC Sizing - Right-sized HVAC

4. High Efficiency Toilets

5. Compact Fluorescent Lighting
   
6. High Performance Windows/Storm Windows

7. Wireless Lighting, Thermostats, and Other Controls

8. Solar Hot Water

9. Recycled/ Renewable Flooring

10. Tubular Skylights


As this list demonstrates, improvements can be made to almost every area of the home.  So, no matter the scope or budget of your next project, incorporating some of these items might well be worth considering.  You will probably save money in the long run by lowering utility bills and by conserving energy resources you’ll be benefiting the environment as well.
