Take Your Life Back

You can be anything you want to be. Ever hear that expression? Somewhere in the world of technology, collapsing economy, rising gasoline prices, and the housing crisis, we begin to doubt the American dream of self-accomplishment. We begin to doubt our own abilities. We begin to doubt our government. We begin to blame our circumstances and our employees and our friends and our families and our environment and our upbringing as reasons why we have not accomplished the things in life we wanted.

The blame is always somewhere else. We need to take a good look in the mirror. Look into the eyes of the person staring back at us.

I am a firm believer in the fact that I control my own destiny. I can only let outside circumstances affect my progress if I choose to do so. In our society, it seems the majority would rather allow all the negativity in the media, in the press, and in our daily conversations to take control over our destiny. Whatever happened to accepting responsibility for your own actions? You can’t control what others do or say. You can control how you respond. As a society, it seems we want to give control of our very being over to outside influences so we can blame everyone and everything else for our failures.

I am in the real estate profession and see it on a daily basis. If an agent doesn’t sell the home quickly enough, or doesn’t have anyone show up at an open house, or doesn’t get enough response from their internet site (if they have one), it is always someone else’s fault. Yet, when I ask them what they are doing to promote themselves and their listings, I am amazed and dumbfounded at some of their answers. I call these the “whiners”.

The really successful agents, as well as general public, never put the responsibility on someone else. They never give up. They never quit. They are perpetual students – learning from their own mistakes, examining what other successful individuals have done, trying new and innovative things. They review the situation, make adjustments or changes, and try again. They ask for help when necessary, but always – always – accept responsibility.

The next time you don’t get the results you want from any facet of your life; be it personal, professional or otherwise, go back and look in the mirror again. Make that person take responsibility. But most of all: do something about it!

That’s my opinion – what’s yours?

Great post and welcome to REW blogging Barry. I always liked what Tony Robbins had to say, if you want a better answer...ask a better question. All the best.

This is a Great post. Thanks for sharing. Reminds me of the movie, Circle of Iron, where this guy named Cord, a great fighter and fears no one and nothing, went to a quest to find the book of enlightenment. Supposedly this book have all the answers to life's questions. In the end he finds the book and all the answer in a book of mirrors. All along the answers are within himself.

I absolutely agree. We create our lives, to a much larger degree than the average person wants to believe. Its easier to be a victim. Best advice I ever heard: if you don't like your life make better choices.

What a great article! It made me realize I am one of the "whiners" you mentioned. My whole attitude changed once I read your post. Thanks!
