Gore Told To Clean Up Own Backyard

Al Gore(April 24/07) Former US vice-president Al Gore, speaking in Calgary last night, was told by Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach to clean up his own backyard before preaching to Albertans.

Gore spoke to a sold-out crowd about his award-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth, and argued that global warming "is being spurred by the use of carbon-based fuels such as oil and coal, is the biggest threat facing the world". He suggested Alberta's oil sands are using far too much natural gas in processing northern Alberta's bitumen, further adding to greenhouse emissions.

Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach said the province is "merely feeding Americans' insatiable demand for energy, so perhaps Gore should look closer to home". Stelmach, who attended the $159-a-ticket show, went on to say "Where do you think we're selling the oil? Right to his own country."

The Premier had requested a meeting with Gore to discuss energy and environmental issues, but the former vice-president never responded.

Gore was quoted in Rolling Stone magazine as saying "for every barrel of oil they extract there, they have to use enough natural gas to heat a family's home for four days. And they have to tear up four tonnes of landscape."

Mr. Gore is reportedly earning $200,000 CDN for each speaking engagement he does, and had spoken to another sold-out crowd earlier in the day in Regina, Saskatchewan. He and his climate change caravan travel between venues in a private jet.

Ain't hypocrisy in style these days? I am OK with whichever side of the aisle someone's on (left or right) as long as they aren't in one and telling me to be in the other-- Those who fly private jets and ride in motorcades are NOT conservationists and they are only using the environment as a vehicle for their own agenda...why not use the internet that he invented (grin) to get the word out...would save a ton of emmissions (grin). Fun post Jim...needed that after the last couple of days of fun... Eric

Eric - glad you enjoyed it . Seems like Mr Gore has finally found his niche .... making friends with all his friends in Hollywood, appearing at the Oscar's, and best of all, making a couple of million $$'s a week just flying around with his climate change caravan on his private jet *something tells me with all the support staff for his show AND his protection detail, that wouldn't be a small Lear jet either*

I agree that it is hypocrisy, but sooner or later the world will get the hint that it is time to start trying to conserve. The envronmentalists drive me nuts though, they are such hypocrites themselves, one of the cleanest forms of electical generation in from Atomic energy, but NO we can't build nuclear power plants, oh my goodness that would be just terrible. Then the super rich the pull the same thing, they want clean energy, but out on cape cod they are trying to put in a wind farm, and the locals all oppose it. I don't understand the wind turbines will be 5 to 6 miles off shore and very hard to see but oh my god it just can't be done they say. I say, get over it. It is just so hard to be clean. I am doing my bit anyway, put a layer of R31 insulation on top of the old insulation in my 1967 house we purchased in December, Today the 1967 single glazed windows started to be replaced with nice energy efficient modern double glazed windows, In the fall our old 50% efficient boiler will be replaced with a 85% efficient boiler. Also have replaced all the old fashioned light bulbs in the house with the energy star bulbs as well. I know this was kind of rambleing but I think some of the points got across. To sum things up, you can call Gore a hypocrite but does that really start getting things moving in the direction they need to start going in?
