Mercenaries Snatch Calgary Mom's Children

Melissa Hawach & familySix months ago Calgary mother Melissa Hawach said goodbye to her 2 young daughters as they left for a holiday in Australia with her estranged husband, Lebanese national Joseph Hawach. When they failed to return home to Calgary 3 weeks later, the mother was told the children had been taken to war-torn Lebanon, where the man has citizenship, to avoid returning them to their mother.

After months and months of exhausting every legal avenue open to her (Lebanon does not have an extradition treaty with Canada), the Calgary woman now finds herself on the run in Lebanon with the 2 girls. She apparently hired 5 ex-British commandos to snatch her daughters back, which they successfully did this past Wednesday. 2 of the mercenaries were arrested later Wednesday at Beirut's international airport Wednesday amid accusations they had kidnapped the children.

International warrants were issued long ago for the father, but Lebanon does not recognize these orders. Should Melissa make it back to Canada with the girls, she could not be sent back to Lebanon to face charges.

It seems to me the Canadian government should go out of their way to ensure this woman and her children are safely returned to Canada. This in light of the millions of dollars spent on evacuating Lebanese holding Canadian passports this summer when the war with Israel was occurring (after-which a majority of these same people, who screamed to be evacuated, simply returned to Lebanon).

Is there no Canadian Embassy in Lebanon? I agree these Canadian citizens should be returned home. If the husband wants custody of his children, he should have to do it legally in the Canadian judicial system where the children are registered citizens. Although I doubt after kidnapping the children he would get any sort of custody

Morgan - There is a Canadian embassy in Beirut. The problem is given the father's nationality, pretty much every authority in Lebanon is hunting the women and the children, making it difficult for them to make their way either to the safety of the embassy or to cross the border. Sounds like a job for the special forces of the Canadian army (extraction team).
