Freak Out Over Linking
Posted Jan 2, 2007 @ 8:31 pm, Viewed by 595 Visitors, Read 616 Times.I just finished reading a recent article by Danny Sullivan on the current state of "Link Exchanges" as they apply to Google:
Stop The Freak Out Over Linking
Without going into too much detail, I felt the final paragraph of Sullivan's post pretty much summed up the attitude webmasters should embrace:
Rule 3 - Link to sites because you want your visitors to know about them.
Did you just do a "bad" exchange? Why, just go over to the Google bad link exchange checking tool and find out. Whoops. It doesn't exist. Don't panic! Again, and I mean this in a totally positive way, screw Google. Stop thinking of whether you are doing a link because Google will like or dislike it. Link because your audience will like it. Do right by your audience, and you are showing the exact behavior that Google is trying to tailor its algorithms to detect.

A true purists (And completely accurate) post on link building. However! We are in the real estate game, and generally "earning" links the way larger corporate sites can through PR (Press releases, not pagerank) or through well written content is much harder for a local agent. Why? Because your target visitors are potential customers and don't typically own websites, even if they do, they certainly won't have the kind of authority and pagerank to help you climb to the top of Google. So your dilema becomes - do I do the the right thing and write my content for my visitors (Which will increase your conversions and thus sales) - are do you clog up your website (Which is in essence your online business storefront) - with content that the search engine purists suggest you write to attract so called earned backlinks? Honestly, I don't believe that any real estate agent site can write the best kind of content for their site (Sales and marketing copy) and still have that content attract natural links. I mean what are they going to say "Hmmm this guy really sold himself well, I am going to send a link" - For resource sites, and those covering topics that appeal to readers who also control authority websites and are in the habit to providing links to great content this method of thinking works great. But you are a real estate agent and need to do exactly as the purists say - write your content for your visitors and your business, not for SE's OR those that control all the good links. So I guess you are screwed right?
