Jan 30, 2007: More than 100 residents of McKenzie Towne attended a town-hall meeting last night to discuss a proposal made by a developer to re-zone a tract of land in the area and build high-rise condos.
Carma Developers had originally applied for building permits to construct low-rise condos in the north end of McKenzie Towne, near 130th Avenue & 52 Street SE. City planners turned down the application and suggested Carma apply for re-zoning of the RM5 (medium density) lands to RM7 (high density). The rationale is that the city needs more high-density property.
If re-zoning is approved, Carma has plans to build 17 storey high-rise condo towers rather than the low-rise condos that exist nearby.
Residents attending the meeting were visibly upset with the proposal, arguing that high-rise condos are not in keeping with the original plans for the community and would destroy the small-town feel of McKenzie Towne.
Alderman Ric McIver, who attended the meeting, was quoted as saying the city needs high-density developments, although he hasn't decided whether or not he'll support the project.

Jeanette - Absoultely. The city (in all their wisdom) have decided they want / need higher density housing projects, and turned down Carma's application for more low-rise condos at the site.
Jeanette - This is for real and I was in attendance at the meeting, which was held at the McKenzie Towne Baptist Church (not the towne-hall as stated). The property in question is located on the southwest corner of 52nd Street and McKenzie Towne Link SE, not closer to 130th. While at the meeting, I specifically asked Carma's representative if they had submitted an application that would comply with the current RM5 zoning and he very clearly stated they had not. Carma also stated they have no plans at this time in mind for the RM7 zoning, which is somewhat confusing until you understand that Carma stated it was always their intent to sell the land. One can only guess that perhaps whoever is intending to purchase this property has placed conditions of rezoning it to RM7 on it? And I have to ask, doesn't increased zoning from RM5 to RM7 mean more money to Carma when they sell the property? Lastly, Ald. Ric McIvor clearly stated to me and a group of others that he would represent our wishes. Based on how we feel and what we all had to say, Ald. McIvor will be saying no to this zoning change.
