UCSC, Santa Cruz, California professor Jose Renau is to give a talk at the College of Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on February 11th.

The talk is on methods to reduce heat build up and efficiency of computer chips. By employing cameras and thermal imaging this work is proposed to better enable detection of hot spots and power leakage in chips. He seeks to increase the efficiencies by reducing extraneous functionality. By determining where the problems lie, the designers and programmer are better able to make the computer chips more efficient. Jose Renau is an assistant professor of computer engineering at UC Santa Cruz.

The University of Santa Cruz is located in Santa Cruz, California. The university has a wide range of academic and engineering programs available. UC’s campus is spread out over the hills above Santa Cruz and is a great environment to learn in. With a wide range of complementary programs, the school has everything from the skies to the ocean with great marine and earth sciences as well. With the proximity to Silicon Valley and the local tech companies, the university has a strong local following and world class curricula.

Santa Cruz benefits by having a diverse range of students and faculty to enrich the community. This not without some angst as the university and the local government are at loggerheads over continuing growth plans. Overall the benefits of a two college town allow for more business development and contribute positively to the economic base. While the university is behind in adding enough housing, the local real estate market seems to absorb the increased demand for housing. Though there will never be enough homes to satisfy demand, and prices will generally increase, there are some infill and high density developments in progress.
