A gift in hindsight to Santa Cruz County Seniors

Locally a woman has bequeathed money to the Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Department. This gift from the estate of Margaret W Nielsen was for the benefit of senior residents of Santa Cruz County. Ms Nielsen left funds in the amount of $75,000 for the improvement of the Simpkins Family Swim Center. The swim center is located behind the Shoreline Middle School buildings, in the Live Oak area of Santa Cruz, Ca.. The well regarded swim center project was spearheaded by Brigid Simpkins with plenty of assistance from Edie Rittenhouse and many private donors. It took many years and lots of work to bring it to fruition in 1998. This gift will help the center.

The Simpkins Swim Center is a much needed, locally used swim and community center. The complex has several pools, with one, the warm pool, a 43,000 gallon pool used for therapy and recreational swimming. The temperature is kept at a warm 86 degrees and has a ramp for wheel chair access. This feature makes it great for seniors to be able to wade in easily and do rehabilitative work and swim aerobics. Activity is one of the keys for a good long life.

The second part of this wonderful gift was also $75,000 and is to be used for assisting seniors with recreational field trips. This gift is great because many seniors' live on limited incomes and do not get around as they used to. Moving and getting out are much more of an event. Quality of life is improved with stimulation, and a change of environment. If you want to get out, there are companies like Cindy’s Celebrations that do this too.

Cindy’s Celebrations, a private company that does trips for seniors, and is fun to use is and is a good way to give a break to you or a caregiver. You probably have seen this local company in their white vans around town.
