UC Santa Cruz was one of a number of UC system universities to be granted money for stem cell research. The $7.2M grant is to be used at the campus to fund new facilities on the 4th floor of the planned Biomedical Sciences Building. The new facility will involve faculty and students from the Baskin School of Engineering, the Division of Physical and Biological sciences. The grant will allow for the hiring of new staff and faculty and give students interested in pursuing stem cell research projects. At UCSC they will be exploring the bodys’ systems of differentiation and self renewal in stem cells.

Their research will use several approaches in modeling organisms such as the fruit fly, mouse, worm and other simple organisms using genetics and molecular biology. By using various computational approaches for understanding the gene regulatory networks, pattern expression and gene- splicing, they hope to further advance the field. Individual projects focus on a number the body’s systems including nervous system development, gene regulation, blood cell differentiation and immune system responses.

This type of work is a great thing for our community of Santa Cruz and will help foster growth in Santa Cruz County as developments come to fruition. As more of this type of research is done in Santa Cruz, the support staff and professionals will come to our community. Many will need homes, some to rent; some to buy. While the university has enough real estate to house the new faculty; whether or not they develop enough housing remains to be seen.

There is  no doubt that Santa Cruz real estate is expensive, as it is in most place academia and research flourish. I think the natural beauty that our area possesses, its relative closeness to the other local hubs for research in South San Francisco and Emeryville will, make this a positive choice for many. Find out what houses cost in Santa Cruz, if you are thinking of taking a job at the university. The prices compare to the San Francisco Bay area, but our beauty makes those pale in comparison, and that is not just because we have great beaches in Santa Cruz.

Bruce Margon, vice chancellor for research, noted that UCSC has received the same level of support from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) as much larger campuses, such as UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco. "It speaks to our emerging visibility in this area of research," Margon said. "We have a small but very powerful cadre of researchers in this field. They have promising ideas and are ready to proceed, so this award comes at the right time."

I am excited to see the university expand in this field that has the possibility to alleviate more of the ailments of mankind.
