Capitola California has been a beach town for well over 100 years and has many interesting neighboring areas, including Pot Belly Beach to the south. Many from all parts of the San Francisco Bay have surrendered their summers to Capitola's shores. Capitola used to be a beach town that had a grand hotel and quite a lively business up until the late 1920's. It tragically went down to fire as many did in that day.

Up the streeet at the top of the hill was the train depot that brought passengers from afar. Of course, before that, it was all horse and buggy. The train depot would later be reinvigorated to spendor as the Inn at Depot Hill. The hill or plateau above this town became known as Depot Hill. You can learn more of Capitola and its' communities, here.

Further south from Capitola beach, was in the late 1800's a chineese fishing village. That area later became part of what is now known as New Brighton Beach, after the famous english seaside town. A short stroll down from that, is the modern day  Pot Belly Beach community. While some may consider it Seacliff, others may consider it Capitola, it is sort of in between.

Pot Belly Beach got it's origins as a place were one could rent a summer cabin on the beach. These were warmed by pot bellied stoves, or so the story goes.Today Pot Belly Beach is a private beach community. Not much sells there, and when it does, it is to the well heeled. The unpetentious development has about 26 homes. Some sit on the sand, and some on the bluffs above.

Pot Belly Beach is a place to get away from it all. It is seemingly isolated at the beach, yet not far from Capitola or Seacliff. This sleepy community is a place I'd want to go to if I were wanting to escape from afar. As part of the miles long beach that stretches all the way to Moss Landing, you can have great long walks and stop at the nearby beach communities of  Seacliff, Rio Del Mar and La Selva Beach.
