Santa Cruz Seniors Symposium a rousing success

I co-sponsored the recent Santa Cruz Seniors Symposium, which was important to me as a Seniors Real Estate Specialist. The workshop was put on by Dan Nicholas, who is a long term care insurance specialist.

The workshop was well attended as people wrestle with the huge silver tsunami that will be sweeping our generation soon. Many in the general public do not know to get this insurance, and the goverment has been doing this care in a costly manor.

For those who have older parents, the cost that you are facing for long term care are staggering and can lead to financial wipe out and destitution unless one is very well to do, or you have planned ahead and have gotten long term car insurance. The fact is many who have gotten long term care have it kick in well before they are old. Our health care system is broken and hopefully the new administration will work on getting it fixed.

There were a number of speakers, including Shary Farr,of Partners for Transitions, Bonnie Burns, Barbara Hansen, Jeffrey Killeen, estate attorney,Steve Glenn of Safe at Home, senior care and Steve Moses, seniors long term care advocate, and Bill Monning, our newly elected California Assemblyman. As you may recognize Shary's name, she is the spouse of our highly regarded Congressman Sam Farr.

It was a packed event and the topics ranged on the how, and means to which senior care is needed and administered. Also discussed was the need for estate planning and getting your advanced health care directive done. This is a critical component of ones life that is best decided before you get into a life threatening situation. Take the time to download this simple for, the advance health care directive. This easy to fill out form tells your care providers how you will be treated. This is not just for the old, but all of us. If we get into a car accident, who would know if you want your organs donated, what lengths togo to keep you alive should you end up in a coma, and things like that? As we get older and may have memory impairment, these decisions are ones you can no longer make. So take the time to do this for yourself, your kids and your loved one. Do it today. Keep a copy in your safe, glove box and give one to your doctor.

A greal unch was put on by Dan Casagrande, a reverse mortgage agent. The questions were varied and it was an informative discussion. One of the points made and I don't quote verbatim, that stuck with me, was from Bill Monning, "what does it say about us if we chronically underfund our early child care and out senior care." The people who will surpass us and the people upons whos' shoulders we grew up on, we don't give the appropriate level of resources. That struck me as we give lip service to the need for things, but dont' actually pay for them.

Teachers are a great example where we all say we need good teachers, they are teaching our future citizens, but we pay them peanuts. I'm not saying that by example, we got our money's worth with the current president. We will need to pay for the services needed for our young and old and our politicians have not wanted to tackle these issues as the costs and consequences are enormous.Sweep it under to rug. I believe locally Bill Monning will take up the challenge and the Obama administration will get this issue addressed. Likely will all need to pay much more in taxes, but that will be necessary, but not popular. Having Sharry Farr in her husband ear will help turnup the volume as we must get our seniors issues resolved.

I think America is in for a wakeup call as the true health care costs of the elderly primarily fall on the government, with people living longer lives, our children will face huge financial burdens.
