The changing of chain stores in our largest mall in Capitola is a sign of the times. Sometimes business take on too much debt with expansions, other times their product mix is poor. Is it a surprise that in this stock market meltdown that Walmart is doing well?

My own experience was that Mervyn's, which had the mid priced name brand merchandise was usually about 20% higher than I would have expected. I will not miss them, as Kohl's is a competitor in the same product space/price as Target. I think they will do well, as well as also bringing another national name brand to the Capitola Mall.

The mall has a good mix of stores with Gottschalks and Macy's and Sears anchoring the shopping center, as well as Ross in a stand alone store. Capitola Beach homes are not at the low end of the economic spectrum, though they have seen a downturn in value. That being said the city revenues from the Capitola homes have dropped coupled with the closing of Mervyns puts a strain on the city. The news was cheered I am sure by the many workers who lost their jobs at Mervyn's and will be able to reapply for work. The city of Capitola which gets all the sales revenue from the mall will be pleased to have the revenue stream back again.Kohl's website is linked for those looking for Capitola jobs.

While Santa Cruz home prices have fallen as well as most other communities, having jobs back again is a great sign. While these workers are not likely to be homeowners given the retail wage, they are an important piece of society and general economic health for Santa Cruz County.

While Santa Cruz foreclosures, are not as prevalent as in the Watsonville area, the effects of people losing their jobs and homes is a devastating blow to people and governments. With these jobs coming back into the local economy and a new president and political direction,I am hopeful we are turning the corner to a more normal time.

The Capitola Mall provides lots of jobs for our local economy as well as saving money since we don't need to go over the hill to Silicon Valley to shop at a Macy's. Since the county has a good range of shopping choices, one has employment for the entry level folks, which keep many other businesses open. We all need to shop and spend money to keep the economy going locally, but to do so prudently, and hopefully without the over use of our credit cards.

With housing prices down and the FHA loans out there, entry level workers can afford to find housing, so these really are good tidings for the holiday and new year.

The Santa Cruz California Beaches are on of the things that attract people here. The area has a vibrant array of communities, located on the north end of Monterey Bay, and is home to artisans, beach goers, hi tech types, and college students. There is plenty of natural beauty from the Santa Cruz Beach areas and other coastal beach towns like Rio Del Mar,to the little mountain communities.
