Your Jacksonville Beach home should not only look great and suit your needs and wants, but it should also be environmentally friendly, or “green.”

You’ve heard the term “going green” a lot lately, but you are probably wondering how to adopt environmentally building and design practices into your next remodeling project.

First, let’s discuss what it means to “go green” when it comes to home remodeling projects for your Jacksonville Beach property:

The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) has developed a list of principles in which to adhere to. They include:

  • Eliminate the use of any product or process known to pollute the air, the water or the Earth.
  • Make use of natural resources, and protect vegetation, wildlife habitats, opens spaces and wilderness.
  • Minimize waste through the reduction, reuse and recycling of products and encourage development of reclaimed, salvaged and recycled products.
  • Make wise use of energy – adopt energy-conserving strategies and choose renewable energy sources.
  • Eliminate any risk to the health of end-users.

Now that you know the fundamentals of green remodeling, you can begin to practice sustainable improvement projects for your home.

Your goal should be to reduce the environmental impact of your remodeling project, which may mean conserving energy, water and materials, and reducing waste and harmful emissions.

Remodeling can be as little as painting a room, or as large as tearing out a kitchen in lieu of an updated one.  Some things to pay attention to include:

  • Using recycled products and building materials
  • Choosing energy efficient appliances
  • Choosing energy efficient doors and windows
  • Installing low-water faucets and showers
  • Choosing natural or rapidly renewable materials
  • Choosing environmentally sensitive paints, adhesives and finishes (zero VOC)
  • Using nontoxic cleaning products
  • Choosing organic bedding
