Buyer Tips: How to View a Home like a Pro

The process of finding your dream St. Johns County home can be exciting and overwhelming, to say the least!

Upon embarking on the hunt for your ideal St. Johns County property, you and your real estate agent will likely assemble a list of St. Johns County properties that fall within your budget, and meet your wants and needs.

After that is accomplished, your real estate agent will schedule a day on which he or she will show you the properties.

The following tips will guide you through the process of viewing homes so that you can focus on the task at hand: finding your dream home!

  1. Start with a clear head and a full belly. Make sure you get enough sleep the night before and eat a light meal beforehand.  If you are lacking sleep or your stomach is grumbling, chances are that you won’t be able to concentrate fully when viewing the homes.
  2. Avoid viewing more than five homes in any given day. Any more than that and all you’ll end up with is a headache. Plus, the more homes you see the harder it becomes to differentiate between the homes and remember the details of each home.
  3. Take along a pencil and pad. Taking notes is a great way to remember details about each home you viewed. And don’t just limit yourself to the benefits of each house. Also include the things you didn’t like.
  4. Consider bringing a digital camera. If note taking isn’t your thing, take along your digital camera and take pictures of different areas of each home you viewed.  You can then later use the pictures as a convenient reference to refresh your memory.
  5. Maintain a running list of your needs and wants, and compare the homes, side by side, to see how they match up against one another.
  6. Don’t forget to pay close attention to each home’s surroundings, not just the home itself. Some questions to ask yourself may include: Is the property located on a busy street? What do the surrounding properties look like? Are they well maintained? Is the property close to your job, shopping, entertainment, schools? What kind of privacy does the property provide?
