Dealing with the Emotions Surrounding Downsizing
Posted Dec 1, 2008 @ 11:52 am, Viewed by 346 Visitors, Read 348 Times. Many homeowners revel in the day that they can downsize their home and simplify their life. The kids are grown and married and the house that once seemed small now suddenly seems like a chore to clean and maintain.
Downsizing, however, often brings on many emotions that some of us have difficulty addressing or dealing with.
Downsizing often involves not only leaving the home we likely spent many years raising our children in, but also parting with many of the possessions to which we have grown attached.
Moving from a four-bedroom Jacksonville home with a basement and an office to a small, patio home with two bedrooms and no basement means downsizing our furniture, as well.
If the process of selling, donating or giving away the majority of your furniture and possessions is particularly difficult for you, then you may want to take it slow. Spend a few days walking through the rooms in your Jacksonville home and identifying which items can go and which ones you’ll want to take with you.
An easy way to do this is to use sticky notes to mark which items you can part with, and which ones you can’t (use two different colored notes to differentiate). Over the course of a few days, or even a few weeks, upon further reflection you may realize that some of these possessions that you thought you couldn’t live without are not so important after all.
The key with downsizing is to eliminate the need to make any rash decisions that you may regret later on.
Another option is to rent a portable storage unit that you can have delivered to your home. These portable storage units allow you to move your possessions and furniture at your own pace. It also eliminates the stress of moving all of your furniture and items in just one day. Instead, you can pack at your own leisure and, perhaps more importantly, give yourself time to deal with the emotions of moving and downsizing.

Carey,
You provide some very useful information here. The emotional side of moving is second only to getting divorced. In a sense, you are sort of divorcing or separating from the home - especially if you've lived there for while.
