How to Make a Move Easier on your Pets

With all of the other things that you must tend to during a move to your new St. Johns County home, add one more thing to the list: your pets! We may dismiss the idea that our pets may have difficulty adapting to a new situation, but it’s true.

Animals are, in general, creatures of habit. They can also tune in immediately to changes in their home, including stress among the family members. This can result in negative behavior, illness or a change in their eating patterns.

It is because of this that, as a pet owner, you’ll want to make sure that the move is as least stressful on your pet as possible.

The following tips will help make the transition to a new home a smoother one for your beloved pet:

  1. Because your pet is used to its predictable, daily routine, it is important to maintain the routine as best as possible during the move. This will cut down on the amount of stress your animal endures throughout the move.
  2. Either remove your pet from the home during the move or place it in a “transition room” where it will remain safe and secure during the chaos of the move.
  3. Move all of your pet’s belongings into the transition room, and keep them there until you are ready to leave the home. This includes beds, toys and food and water dishes.
  4. Make sure your pet’s identification tags are on. With the chaos of a move, many animals get loose due to open doors and distracted owners.
  5. Before letting your animal loose in your new home, check to make sure the house is secured and safe. For example, check the backyard fence before letting your dog out for the first time.
  6. Continue to provide consistency for your pet in your new home. If you feed your dog every morning at eight o’clock, for example, make a point to continue to do this to alleviate stress and continue the routine.
