What a Real Estate Listing Won’t Tell you (but the Neighbors will)
Posted Jan 5, 2009 @ 2:16 pm, Viewed by 347 Visitors, Read 348 Times. If your dream Jacksonville home seems too good to be true, you may want to do a little investigative work before making an offer.
Regardless of whether you have found the perfect home on the perfect piece of property with the perfect view, chances are that if you purchase a home in a neighborhood or subdivision you will encounter issues of some kind down the road.
With that being said, there is a quick and easy way to get the scoop on the property and the neighborhood in question: ask the neighbors! Most neighbors will answer questions and be fairly forthcoming about issues regarding their neighbors, their community and their schools, for starters.
Your best bet is to visit the property on a weekend when neighbors are more likely to be outside.
Your list of questions for the neighbors, although tailored to your specific situation, may be something like:
- What is the traffic like on this street?
- How are the services of the community, such as garbage collection and recycling collection?
- Are the neighbors friendly? Is it a tight-knit community?
- How would you rate the schools in the area?
- Are there any problems or issues with this home that you’re aware of?
- Have there been any reported crimes, burglaries or vandalism in this area as of late?
- Is there a strong police presence?
- Are there any community-wide ordinances or restrictions I should know about?
If you are hesitant to approach neighbors and begin asking questions, just remember that your home is likely the largest and most important purchase you will ever make, so it only makes sense that you are completely comfortable with every aspect of your home purchase as you can be!
