Your Home Safety Checklist

Moving into your new Ponte Vedra Beach property can be quite exciting and overwhelming, but it is important to remember that home safety should come first when prioritizing your “to do” list.

Use the following tips as your guide when implementing your home safety checklist for your new Ponte Vedra Beach home:

• Heating/Cooling Equipment – Contact a qualified HVAC technician to thoroughly check your heating and cooling equipment and to make sure they are safe and properly functioning. Among the safety checks the technician will perform include a carbon monoxide test for your furnace.


• Fire Extinguisher – Purchase a new fire extinguisher for, at the very minimum, every floor of your Ponte Vedra Beach home. Also consider placing one in the kitchen and one in the laundry room.


• Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter – Make sure all exterior outlets, and all interior outlets located near a water source, are equipped with ground fault circuit interrupters, also known as GFCI outlets. A GFCI is very important, as it is designed to trip the circuit and prevent electric shock.


• Smoke Detectors – Don’t assume that the smoke detectors in your home are working properly and functioning. Instead, install new smoke detectors on every floor of your home, and outside all bedrooms.


• Carbon Monoxide – A quality carbon monoxide detector is a vital safety device for any home, as carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas that can not be smelled or detected without the use of a carbon monoxide detector. Place one on every floor of your home.


• Sturdy Handrails and Non-Slip Rugs and Carpets – Providing a safe environment in which you are less likely to suffer a trip and fall injury is very important, so make sure all handrails are secured to the wall and all rugs have non-slip treads.
