How to Keep your Home Cool (and your Energy Bills Down) This Summer
Posted Feb 23, 2009 @ 12:42 pm, Viewed by 332 Visitors, Read 335 Times. The excitement about your new Jacksonville Beach home may be cut short when you receive your first energy bill. With energy costs soaring, and worries about the environment on many people’s minds, lowering our energy bills is important not only for our pocketbook, but for the environment, as well.
Luckily, there are many things that we can do to help lower our energy costs, especially during the warmest summer months.
- Make sure your Jacksonville Beach home is well insulated, particularly in the attic. A well-insulated home reduces energy costs by retaining the conditioned air for a longer period of time. A well-insulated home also extends the life of the cooling system. Many experts recommend at least 12 inches of insulation for your home’s attic.
- Install window awnings, blinds or shades for your windows, especially those that are exposed to the sun during the heat of the day. You can keep your home cooler by simply covering the windows during the hottest part of the day.
- Install ceiling fans throughout the home. Ceiling fans are great energy-savers, for a few reasons. First, they are fairly simple to install and typically cost-effective. They also use very little energy to operate, yet can circulate the cool air in your home more efficiently, thus cutting down on your energy bill.
- Install a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats are fairly inexpensive and are easy to program and operate, yet they can save you hundreds every year on energy bills. Simply program the thermostat to raise the temperature of the house while you are away at work, for example, and watch the savings begin to build.
- Avoid using your oven on very warm days, as this will simply increase the temperature inside your home. Instead, head outside and grill and enjoy the energy savings, as well as delicious, grilled foods!
