The exterior of your home is your home’s first impression, so if you plan on selling your St. Augustine property, it may be time to spruce up your home’s stucco exterior.
Stucco is a popular choice for exteriors in Florida, as well as other parts of the country, because it is durable, easy to apply and cost-effective. And luckily, there are a variety of things you can do to make your stucco exterior look brand new.
- Repair it – Brush on an elastomeric sealant to fill in large cracks (anything larger than the width of a credit card). Larger cracks may need to be repaired by a professional. Keep the patched area shaded, if possible, during the drying phase, as sealants that dry too quickly do not bond as well. In addition, do not repair the stucco if the weather is expected to drop below 40 degrees.
- Clean it – Before you can paint your stucco you must clean your stucco and achieve a surface free of dirt and debris. It must also be cleaned of loose paint. You can use a pressure washer to clean your St. Augustine home’s stucco exterior, and a masonry surface cleaner may be used, as well, if the stucco is particularly dirty, or if the surface is chalky or sandy.
- Paint it – Before painting, make sure all of the window and door frames are properly caulked. Then, find a high-quality, acrylic latex paint designed specifically for stucco exteriors. Some homeowners also find that elastomeric paint is a smart choice. Elastomeric paints are commonly used along coastal areas that experience extreme weather conditions, as it is extremely durable and has insulating properties.
Applying paint to a stucco exterior is best accomplished through the use of a paint sprayer, although you’ll need to pay close attention to the manufacturer’s recommendation for the paint’s spread rate.
