Lighting Trends for 2009 and Beyond

Perhaps the best thing about today’s lighting trends is the sheer lack of trends. In other words, the lighting in your Duval County home should be based upon the type of design and ambience you want to create, and should not be dictated by fads and trends that last for a short period of time.

With this in mind, there are, however, several movements in lighting design that have been noted in the last couple of years. The following lighting movements, in addition to being adaptable and flexible to a wide variety of design concepts, show no sign on going anywhere anytime soon. What does that mean for you and your Duval County property? A classic style that will fit your lifestyle for years to come.

  • Larger lighting fixtures – Larger lighting fixtures make a bolder statement. They also serve as art in a room. Large lighting fixtures also fit in better with the larger rooms and higher ceilings of many of today’s homes. With the resurgence of the large gathering space and the open floor plan also comes a change in design details. Larger lighting fixtures fill a space and make a ten-foot ceiling seem not so cavernous and cold. They also ground a room and separate a large space into smaller living spaces.
  • Energy-Efficient Lighting – Energy efficiency is a hot topic among both builders and designers, as more homeowners are now looking for ways to not only cut their energy consumption, but to also remain sensitive to environmental issues and concerns. Today’s lighting may involve dimmer switches and automatic lighting controls. They may also be equipped for low-voltage bulbs, such as compact fluorescent and LED bulbs. As the technology improves in the low-voltage bulb category, more homeowners are recognizing the quality of energy-efficient lighting fixtures.
  • Multi-Dimensional Lighting – Today’s rooms do not have just one lighting source. Instead, they have layers of light which fill dark spaces, provide task lighting and accent architectural details or items of interest in a room. Illuminating the often-neglected perimeter of the room, and creating practical task lighting, makes a room not only more functional, but more beautiful and comfortable, as well.
