What’s that Smell? Ridding your Home of Unwanted Odors

Here’s a tough fact: your home can be the prettiest on the block, but if it stinks, you can turn off a slew of potential buyers.

Luckily, there are a variety of steps you can take to ensure that your Jacksonville home smells as pretty as it looks:

• Steam clean the carpets. There are loads of smells that lurk in a carpet, and the easiest way to freshen them up is by steam cleaning. You can either rent a company to do this for you, or you can rent a steam cleaning machine and get the job done yourself.  If your carpets are stained or old, you may want to consider replacing them. Everyone loves a “new carpet” smell, and your buyers will certainly appreciate a new carpet.


• Take care of the Fluffy or Fido situation. It is important to understand that, although your kitty and doggie are the apple of your eye, not everyone will love them. And that goes for their odors, too. The litter box is often the first culprit, so it is important to change it frequently while your home is being shown, or take it out of house during a showing. Either way, a smelly litter box is a certain turn-off. The next problem may be with your dog. Dogs smell, even if you think your dog doesn’t.  Give your dog frequent baths while your house is on the market and, by all means, take it with you during a showing or open house, if possible.


• Take out the trash. The remnants of your fish dinner last night will do nothing for your home’s interior scent. In other words, either avoid cooking bold-smelling food while your home is on the market, or certainly make it a point to take out the trash and wrap up any leftovers.


• Open up the windows. There is no better way to flood your Jacksonville home with a fresh smell than to open the windows before a showing or open house.


• Put out the cigarette. If you smoke in your home, stop! Air out your home, have every upholstered or soft surface throughout the home steam cleaned, and smoke outside during the entire process.
