Crazy Day, my head is spinning

I spent the majority of the day reading REW forums to learn more about SEO for real estate. I have also started an ActiveRain account, got my REW blog turned on and read at least 10 different real estate blogs to see what other people do. My head is spinning from it all, I don't know where to start... I learned today that linking is the most important thing in SEO and I have always thought it was original content. I spend 90% of my time working on new content or making existing content read better. I'm starting to think I wasted a lot of time, I should have been writing content half the time and working on getting good quality links the other half. Now I have to play a big game of catch up and I hope I'm not to late.
Tonight I sent out my first batch of emails for link requests to a pretty big handful of top ranked sites. I have only recieved one reply so far and it was a link to the websites automatic link system, which is not what I'm looking for, I would really prefer a small text link on a nice page and in return I'm offering them the same. I have about 8 links on my home page going out to other websites that linked to me over the past year. Is that bad? I'm not sure.
I wonder if anyone will actually read this, that is the big question. At least on my website I know I have people visiting and staying for a few minutes on average. If anyone gets this far will you please let me know, that will inspire me to actually keep an up to date blog.

and you're not alone. In the beginning this can be quite daunting.
With practise and patience you'll feel more comfortable and find your niche.
"Don't sweat the small stuff", you're off to a good start.
Where did you read that reciprocal linking is the most important thing in SEO, not content? For those who got their sites deindexed by G for recip linking for a few months earlier in the year, they might tell you something different. Only after they removed those pages, did they reappear.
I've been playing with SEO for three years, two to four hours a day and still feel lost.

You will probably get a lot of click from other realtors but not many actual home buyers and sellers.
