Haida Gwaii: West Coast Real Estate Deals

With the summer upon us the city dwellers within Calgary are beginning to turn their investment sights towards the coast in search of their own private piece of paradise. Whether you are a baby boomer searching for that perfect retirement spot this island is currently in an extreme flat market allowing buyers to scoop up land for under $100,000.

If you are unfamiliar with Haida Gwaii it is a very scenic island located on the northern corner of British Columbia. Here you can find older 4 bedroom homes for under $50,000, beautiful ocean front land for around $11,500 and you can even scoop up an ocean front mansion should you choose for around $689,000. Now that we have caught your attention with these amazing prices you should know this island offers many different natural amenities including: kayaking, sport fishing, breath taking beaches, natural hot springs and of course the world famous Haida villages.

A real estate agent and a resident of Haida Gwaii of 16 years admits the real estate market here is extremely flat. He also claims there are lots and properties on the island offering 2.5 acres of ocean front land with views all the way to Alaska. It is not unusual for properties within Haida Gwaii to stay on the market for at least 2 years before making a sale. Of course this recent publicity may alter this previous stagnant market. He noted that many of the new home owners and property owners are coming from the Alberta oil field.

Only 5,000 people live on this island and a third of this population is of Haida ancestry. The entire island is claimed by the Haida and these original people live in two main villages on the island, Masset in the North and Skidegate in the south. or an investor searching for a family vacation spot, you may find that many of the obvious locations have been completely saturated such as Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Haida Gwaii has been nick named the “Galapagos Island of Canada” and Queen Charlotte is the largest village on the island with a population of 1,000 people. In total there are two main islands to set your sights on in terms of potential real estate, Graham Island in the north and Moresby Island in the south along with about 150 small islands surrounding the two.

Now that you have a bit more information about Haida Gwaii it is time to start looking for that perfect slice of paradise for a price that simply can’t be passed up!

I've never been that far north up the coast, but I know a few people who go up to vacation there every year and rave about how beautiful and unspoiled it is. If I had a job where I could work remotely, I'd love to live in an area like that :)
