LEC update | Not much to see yet

I thought it might be fun to document the process of working on my new LEC2 site. Everyone keeps telling me how lucky I am because I get to start this site from scratch. I keep looking at a blank template that has no customizations yet and thinking where do I start.
Well I'm really behind already and all I was supposed to do was supply a phone number, logo and give input on photos that I want for the slideshow.
I liked the colors in the standard site so I decided not to make any changes. One problem I did not anticipate is that the blue/green and burnt red color are not easy to match up with photos for the slide show. I guess I have a reputation to live up to based on feedback I get from my Davis Real Estate site so I have felt some pressure to pick out some good photos. What people don't realize is that the REW designers make the photos look really good. I've been lucky to work with Ying on my Davis site and she's working with me again on this one.
Since the photos aren't up to see yet, I think that tans, burnt reds and yellows, work fine with the default colors. I had a hard time trying to match the blue/green so I just gave up and focused on other colors.
Next step:
I don't have the IDX yet on the site, my broker has signed off on the additional IDX feed and the paperwork has been submitted to my local MLS provider. Not having the IDX in place makes it difficult for me to work on the city pages. My goal for the next week is to at least identify and create the city pages. I am also planning on getting familiar with the different snippets. There are many more standard snippets with this site than the basic template.
I have a long way to go before my site even begins to look like this but eventually I will get my site together, I hope sooner rather than later.

Judy, once you figure out how to use a mls snippet for one page you will be good to go. The cool thing about snippets is that you can figure out what would be a good feature/search type based on your area and then put it (or have REW put it) into place. CMS2 is also quite an improvement over the older system. I just got the control panel on my Davis site -- now that is a great feature as well and a good compliment to CMS2.
i am a big fan of the snippett
Snippets become addictive.. even after you have several hundred or 1,000..
I'll vouch for that!
I have more ideas of what I can do with snippets than the actual time to build (and more importantly) promote the pages. The snippets are one of the BEST things about an REW website.
And I'm feeling brain dead trying to figure them out. I'll just have to start experimenting tomorrow. I spent hours trying to find an easy-to-follow tutorial but what came with my new cms isn't that easy - for me. I need exact step-by-step directions for different snippets and I spent over an hour trying to find such a thing to no avail. I gave up. Can anyone point me to a link? Thanks!
Judy, we do have telephone support you know
- Anyways, feel free to book some time with me and I will be happy to personally help out a moderator of the REW community
After reading your blog entry I'm feeling very guilty right about now. I purchased a REW site almost a year ago for the Spokane market and haven't done a single thing with it. I can relate on being overwhelmed.
Morgan, thanks for the offer and I might have to pick up that phone! However, I'm more of a "read it on paper" type of person. If I do it over the phone I'll forget how I did it the next time!
Judy,
I will be glad to answer any questions you may want to shoot my way. I think the snippets for different MLS's are sometimes quite different, so mine would not work for you, but the concept of copying the "sample snippet", saving it as a new snippet, and then making the needed changes to pull the listings you want is pretty basic.
Thanks Cal - maybe I'll contact you. I'm highjacking Carolyn's post!
Joe, don't feel guilty, just find a few minutes here and there to start working on your site. One of the things I was trying to show with this post is that creating this regional site for me is going to happen in small steps.
Cal I think you are correct that our snippets are all a little different based on the data feed.
Judy, do you think you are having questions with the CMS or snippets itself. Post specific questions in the forum -- REW cust service and members have always been good about answering any questions I have. Sometimes I wonder why I don't pick up the phone and call up there when I can't figure something out but I also think I like to "read" the how-to and I'm stubborn and want to figure things out on my own. I just may bug everyone I can find to see if what I've figured out is right though.

Can't wait to see it! I just upgraded to the CMS 2 and they're still tweaking my new custom IDX so I still have to learn how to use the basic snippets. I need to put some time aside to figure out how to do it.
