Why Google has POUNDED Yahoo: The power of FOCUS

It was announced in several places, including here, that Yahoo is laying off "hundreds of its employees".

I have taken some time to think over why it is that Yahoo is laying off hundreds of people in an ever-growing industry (online search / online advertising). I mean think about it. This is an industry that is growing by leaps and bounds. if you can't make money in THIS environment, you must really not be good at business, right?

I mean, i get it if they were in the mortgage business, but they are not. So I went to Google and Yahoo in search of answers. All I needed to do was take a couple of screenshots of their home pages:

Focus

CAN YOU SEE THE DIFFERENCE?

Game. Set. Match for Google. Those who FOCUS on one thing very clearly can dominate those who do not. Then when they reached a dominant state, they can buy other dominant entities and enter even more new areas. People come to a Search Engine for a REASON. They want relevant results.

One search engine has been dominant. The other has lost sight of its purpose in my opinion.

Great post. Google's simple user interface is remarkably intelligent. They allow the user to get what they want - a search feature. With igoogle, if the user wants more, they can add more.

I used to love Yahoo and I used to only use yahoo to do my searches. But for some reason they changed their algorithm to compete or keep up with Google and that's when they started messing everything up. The other day I used it to search Tampa related real estate and ... and... of course their yahoo real estate came up FIRST... but what's surprising was one of the search result was Baltimore and had nothing do do with Tampa nor real estate. You got me on that one. I think they should sell to Microsoft. Microsoft needs to buy something... or maybe the other way around... pull a K-Mart stunt. LOL

Tampa - more than likely, when you were searching yahoo, it was when they were powered by Google - which was until early 2004.

Google definitely has the upper hand here. They are tricky, as well. Aside from having a Search Engine completely focusing on.. being a search engine (rather than an online newspaper), they also go around buying things in the background like Blogspot and YouTube.. which are also commendable websites. I can't even really think of something like this that Yahoo has done. Maybe if they got into the game by investing into some of those other smaller companies, they would draw more people to their search engine.

Spot on, Nick... But they bought the BIG DOG in a given industry...and got a ton of notoriety (and traffic) with each one. YouTube is gonna be a bargain for them in the end... Hope things are well in Nanaimo.. Best Eric

I also used to use Yahoo. It was my home page, it was customized, had news feeds, games but was not really quick to load. Google loads up quickly and links easily to other areas of interest such as news, video. Yahoo (even if personalized) feels sort of limiting in its information as the home page presents its users with the "top" choices for information laid out on its home page, google is limitless as the home page is a blank slate that allows the user to type whatever they are interested in or looking for in their own words.
