Trulia hires Lobbyists - - Nice.
Posted Oct 12, 2008 @ 5:36 am, Viewed by 968 Visitors, Read 1010 Times.Well, isn't that nice. I woke up Saturday morning to read an email from a fellow blogger telling me that Trulia is now hiring a "team" of real estate industry execs to go influence and "connect with" NAR and local MLS's. He posted it here on my blog (he's a reporter). I have spent much of the weekend thinking (and editorializing about the implications of this.
Lobbyists.
Great. Now we are left with the task of combating the mis-information on both the REALTOR and the MLS / NAR level.
Here's two open questions for the industry:
Aren't lobbyists hired to convince people in another industry to do stuff THEIR way? Whether it is RIGHT or not? They answer to the dudes that pay them. Plain and simple.
How's this strategy working for Congress and the mortgage crisis? Who (in the end) pays for these types of lobbying efforts?
Splendid.
What are your thoughts?

Ding! Ding! Spot on, Cal.
My worry is that they're going to be lobbying to people that simply don't know any better and will probably eat up their ideas. SCARY!
I'm with Judyo here. I fear that Trulia will have the "art of convesation" on their side when they pony up to the table and begin talking with MLS boards. I believe the boards won't know how to say no because they lack the technical expertise to understand the underlying problem with Trulia.
The California Association of Realtors is having their annual convention in Southern California this week. I made a point of talking to my association's president about this issue before he left for the meeting. I stressed that this is a company who are not real estate agents and ultimately may not have the agents best interest at heart.
I'm involved in my local Association of REALTORS, I can see paid consultants very easily promising things that look attractive in the short term to the associations.

Eric,
All you have to do is look at the state of the economy and markets of all types and it easy to figure out that most of the current mess we find ourselves in was caused by lobbyists prodding politicians to line the pockets of 1) the special interest, 2) the lobbyist, and 3) the politician. I am sure you can guess what I think about this and regret that sometimes it appears that NAR doesn't necessarily look out after their own memberships interests.
