A few days ago, an interesting argument arose in the office. One of my co-workers compared the notion of web standards to socialism. While I'm not convinced that socialism is inherently a negative thing, I have to admit to taking umbrage to the idea that adherence to the emerging standards of the new Web -- XHTML in particular -- represents some sort of anti-meritocracy.
