I'll Take It!

I guess anyone who’s been involved in an occupation for over 20 years has stories…but I do think that being a real estate agent exposes you to the potential for some really great stories.  I’ve decided to occasionally share some of my favorite stories.  Although the names have been changed to protect the innocent, you have my word that all of these stories are true.

I was probably in about my 6th or 7th year of business when, one evening, I got a phone call from a teacher at one of my son’s elementary school.  She explained that she and her husband, both of whom had been married before, had just written their last tuition check.  All of the offspring were now totally on their own and this couple, who had rented their entire married life, now wanted to buy a house.  The teacher (let’s call her Kate) said that she and her husband (let’s call him Tom) didn’t make a lot of money, so they suspected that they were going to have to head to the northern part of Montgomery County in order to find something they could afford.  She lamented this because she knew that this would increase the commuting time dramatically for both her and her husband.

When Kate explained the kind of house they were looking for and their price range, I suggested that they didn’t have to limit their search to the northern part of the county.  “In fact,” I volunteered, “I saw a house today that sounds absolutely perfect and it was in the Wheaton area, which would make your commutes to Bethesda very easy.”  Kate wanted to know all about the house (which I’d seen on agent tour that day) and I was able to recount all of its features and the price.  She sounded excited about the possibility of not having to travel so far to their jobs and we agreed to get together to begin their search over the next few days.

It was after 10pm that same evening that one of our sons answered the phone and told me that Kate was calling.

“We’ll take it,” she said.

“You’ll take what?” I asked.

“We’ll take the house that you told me about.  Tom just got home and I told him all about it and we love it!” she explained.

Maybe I’m not very good at selling houses, but my reaction was to tell Kate that she couldn’t buy the house….at least not without seeing it.  She visited with me the next day (without Tom) and they wrote an offer that evening…. And lived in the house for over 10 years.

…a true story.
