301 (Re)directing Me Crazy?

It all started with an innocent question about 301 redirects and Google.  I had one url “301”d (as the cool kids say) from my old website to my current REW website when it went live.  My previous website had some relevant back-links - so there was some “Google love” there.  And a good man or woman knows never to turn down love from the big G. The way I understand it, that’s the most “organic” purpose of the “301” -- to tell the SEs "hey, I'm changing locations permanently but please don't forget about all that great content I had my at my old place".  That seems fair to me as long as your "previous place" is related to the current locale.

In my case, the old website KoitzTeam.com was “301”d to KoitzGroup.com (the new site).  So, the way I think about it, KoitzTeam.com is dead but its links live on in KoitzGroup.com.

But what about 301 re-directs not for the love of Google, but for the love of people?  Can I have both?  For example, my site covers a couple large jurisdictions but our group does the bulk of our work in an area in Montgomery County, MD called Bethesda.  For a large print-ad campaign we were running about Downtown Bethesda in “Bethesda Magazine”, I bought the domain name www.DowntownBethesdaLiving.com and, as you can see, “301”d it to KoitzGroup.com/downtown-bethesda.php.  Mind you this url came “straight off the rack” from Godaddy.  It had never received any love from Google in its short life.  Its sole purpose was/is to provide readers a memorable, one-click-stop to the area that they were reading about.

So now I humbly leave the question to this consortium of great minds.  What’s the harm or possible implications of “301”ing “brand new” domain names relevant to the page you are “301”ing them to?

Thanks in advance for the  “301” 411

 * And many thanks to John Allen for helping with some of my initial "301" questions.

There is absolutely no harm at all, in fact many people purchase niche or area specific domains for target offline marketing - A 301 is always the way to do a redirect if that is the only and final destination of that URL however something to consider (So you might be going crazy for nothing)

If the domain is brand new, and not linked to from anywhere on the web, there is really no way (Or reason) for Google to ever be aware of it in the first place - so it's kind of a moot point.

I always go crazy for nothing, Morgan!  That's my thing  No, it's just fun working trying to learn enough to figure out what questions even to ask (miles to go!)

So....for directories that only allow urls.  Could you use "301"s to create keyword rich anchor text?  For example, if  "Bethesda Real Estate" was my number priority, is there value in "301" ing the domain BethesdaRealEstate.com to my main Bethesda page.  Just a couple grains of sand?

Thanks as always...

If you have 301 in place Anchor Text is not really a factor in your example. Interesting concept though (Get listed in a directory, then do a 301?) Kind of a scam, and might be a no-no in Google's eyes. hmmmm

PS We need to talk LEC information architecture here pretty soon, can you call Carrie and book a time?

Thanks

Yeah I know, that concept doesnt "feel" right does it?...just "thinking out loud".  But not a terrible idea right

Sweet, I'll give Carrie a call...it'll be a fun fine-tuning.  Really looking forward to it.  Thanks as always, Morgan...
