Bethesda Real Estate - 5 More Wonderful Streets to Live On
Posted Sep 13, 2008 @ 6:47 am, Viewed by 576 Visitors, Read 616 Times.I love Bethesda Magazine…I think they do a great job of highlighting local issues and I find myself reading most issues cover-to-cover. The September/October edition had an article called “10 Great Streets To Live On”, which probably needs no explanation – but, just in case, it identified “10 Bethesda/Chevy Chase-area streets that have a unique identity and a strong sense of community.”
As a real estate agent, I have knowledge of most (if not all) of the streets in the greater Bethesda/Chevy Chase area, so none of the streets named was new to me. And I agree that all are “great to live on.” But I also know of others in the area that I think are equally impressive, so I thought it might be fun to add to this list.
So, in no particular order, here are the streets that appeal to me:**
1. Montgomery Lane: (between Woodmont and Arlington) in downtown Bethesda. I’ll start with the place I know best, since I lived in a townhome at City Homes of Edgemoor for 10 years.
The townhouses, along with the (highrise) Edgemoor Condominium and the (lowrise) Edgemoor at Arlington, comprise the bulk of the population on this wonderful street. I actually suggested this to the Bethesda Magazine folks when they were soliciting suggestions for their article – but I think that they probably thought that the street lacked a sense of community. It’s easy to make this assumption, but it’s wrong. Not only do the residents of this wonderful, walkable street have all of Bethesda at their doorsteps, they also are part of a very special community and it truly feels like a neighborhood.
2. Cumberland Avenue (Somerset subdivision of Chevy Chase) is another favorite. Everyone loves Somerset’s convenience to both Bethesda and to Chevy Chase…walking distance to two Metro stops…and this charming street has some of the most stunning houses in the neighborhood.
3. Overhill Road in the Greenwich Forest subdivision of Bethesda is another street that offers convenience (walk to downtown Bethesda) combined with tons of curb appeal. Many of the homes are on large, tree-lined lots, and have Tudor-style designs. Some have been substantially updated/expanded and some are still “original” – all are charming and wonderful!
4. Burdette Court, near the intersection of Burdette Road and River Road, is a great place to find a “Rixey” home. Tom Rixey built mostly Williamsburg-type colonials in this area in the 1960s and early 1970s. He was known for his detailed moldings and quality construction. Although many of these homes have been renovated or expanded, most owners are careful to maintain the Rixey look.
5. Orkney Parkway, although it sounds like a “major” road, consists of only 12 homes with an average lot size of well over a half of an acre. Located just off of River Road (near the intersection of River and Wilson), this heavily treed, close-in Bethesda sanctuary, has developed a new charm of its own with the emergence of several new custom homes that take advantage of the generous lots.
We’re fortunate in the Bethesda area that we have so many wonderful streets that offer appealing places to live!
