Twitter Communities - Finally Knoxed into Sense
Posted Nov 4, 2008 @ 8:37 pm, Viewed by 754 Visitors, Read 1051 Times.A couple of confessions – my last tweet reads “Figuring out what I want to be for Halloween...any ideas?.” Not a bad one, though any one of my “friends” (although per photo to right) it's exceedingly clear I chose not to accept any good advice. (unfortunately, I'm not the police officer -- and no, that is not a real police officer!)
Still Twitter ComFounded
I’m still trying to figure out all the angles on Twitter. I was cajoled into opening account by one of my good friends but, like most of us, after logging in for the first time, I left it idle for a while (that initial visit was terrifying!) I’m sure that many of you will associate with that first time, looking blankly at the screen and asking "what the hell am I doing". I guess it’s sort of the equivalent to the first time we handled a Rubik's cube. What do I do with this thing and even if I figure it out, how am I going to get there? How does all of this apply to my friends, business, and any combination thereof? However, just like any other new device, application, endeavor, you can slowly find your way.
Still Twitter Complex?
Understanding Twitter and figuring out how it will best work for you, doesn’t come easily. I became sort of "Twitter addicted" reading countless how to's", information on “new apps”, posts on “how you can use Twitter to leverage your business” etc...And this is where Twitter can "get you". Disguised in this ridiculously simple interface is a robust, pliable marketing machine that can be manipulated as an accomplice to any marketing endeavor. The foundation of how you communicate is based on the “end goal” of your endeavor. For example, though not my cup of tea, there may be a place for some real estate agents with the right audience, to simply broadcast listings. Others may want to use more subtle approaches, mixing “updates” with timely pieces about the real estate market. Truly, limitless ways to skin that cat...
Then There’s the Twitter Community – Finally Knoxed in the Right Direction
For me, the past few days have been a bit of a revelation (though I think I just confirmed information that I knew all the time). On Thursday, right after finishing a run through the Marina District in San Francisco, I received a quick direct message via Twitter from Lou Lynch, letting me know of a small bug he found on my new website. He was a friend; just watching my back. This morning, Knox, another friend and Denver SEO authority, knowing I had been in San Francisco for Halloween (and perhaps worried about my behavior/condition) dropped a pitch perfect message...
“Still with us, Kev?"
I laughed, thinking not only about the weekend, but also about how well those few words conveyed so much.
What made the message even more appropriate was reading Knox’s latest post, “Twitter Makes Communities Tighter”. It's a great read (and not just because I'm mentioned in it!). It made me think about Eric Blackwell and his golden rule -“It’s about the relationships...if you take care of those, your web presence tends to take care of itself. I am not being flippant. It is the truth.”
Twitter Completion! Just one Tool, One Microcosm
So I’m not exactly sure I've figured out all the angles on how I’m going to use Twitter. But I know it’s a wonderful instrument to continue to cultivate relationships, both new and old. And as Knox also seems to suggest, it’s a microcosm for online social networking. So this “Twitter'dicted" user has absorbed as much Twitter rhetoric that he can get his hands on and it still comes down to those couple of basic rules...choose your friends wisely, be good to them, care for them, watch their backs (grin). and the rest will fall into place.

I'm certainly interested in all of this social networking but there's only 24 hours in a day and I'm still not sure of the value on participating on some or all of these venues. So I think I've tried most of them with the exception of Twitter. Maybe during the down time, although I seem busier than ever marketing my listings, tweaking my mulitiple websites and getting ready for 2009.
It is funny how everybody is confused when they start Twitter. The reason is that new users are not yet following anybody and nobody is following them.
It is kind of like expecting to walk into a big party only to find out the house is empty and you are by yourself. You ponder cracking a beer and sitting on the couch alone until you decide it would be better to just leave.
It seems when you come back to Twitter a few months later, some people you know have found you and it begins to make more sense. I think that people then spend some time socializing before they discover that Twitter is actually a great way to maintain a close relationship with a LOT of people.
Maybe that wasn't the case for you, but that was my experience
@Carolyn - Ha! Very happy to hear about the costume part! And "Twiteratti", wow, no idea...that's hysterical. See, a new tid-bit today!
@Judy - I'm with you...there’s only so much time in the day. And I agree with staying focused and selective. be at the places you really want to be...if not, there goes your authenticity. Just like Eric Blackwell was talking about "going to your favorite bar"
@ Ryan - What a perfect explanation...you can hear the crickets chirping at first! Exactly the case for me! Some people found me, I found them, then I started playing around....not to say I have all the pieces together yet, but I "get it".
RyanRE,
You should put your twitter video link in these comments.

Kevin you sound just like me, the twitter part not the costume part. I read tons of blog posts, sat down several times at the screen and thought now what. Quick story, probably a year ago I even got a lead because of twitter. One of the "Twiteratti", yes they are agents who call themselves that, was looking for an agent in my area. No one answered the tweet and another member found my profile on Active Rain and emailed me. I did not know enough at that time to even send a message back so emailed instead. Nothing happend with that lead but I think there is definite potential in all sorts of different ways.
