Bethesda is a wealthy and well educated area ins outhern Montgomery County, Maryland, just northwest of Washington, D.C. Although very urban, and becoming more urban all the time, it is not incorporated and has fairly undefined borders. Following the opening of the Bethesda Metro station (on the red line), the downtown area began to expand and has become a true destination. Bethesda residents and visitors can also access the Medical Center Red Line stop, which is located on the NIH Campus, just across the street from the National Naval Medical Center.

The main commercial corridor that runs through Bethesda is Wisconsin Avenue, which changes its name to Rockville Pike just north of the NIH campus and changes again in more northern communities. South of Bethesda, Wisconsin Avenue continues through Chevy Chase, Friendship Heights, Maryland and into Washington, D.C., ending in Georgetown.
The outer rim of Bethesda is known for older houses that still hold a strong value in today’s residential market. The closer the homes are to the center of Bethesda and the more “walkable” they are to Bethesda conveniences, the more valuable they become. Houses with Chevy Chase addresses also border on the downtown Bethesda district.
Bethesda Real Estate ranges from moderately expensive to really expensive! Because it's unincorporated and, therefore, a little undefined, there are parts of Bethesda that are very exclusive and parts that are more modest. This range of housing types translates to prices that begin in the $600ks (for single family homes) to over $7 million. In general, the closer the property is to the downtown bethesda area, the more expensive it becomes. This is true of single family homes, as well as condos and townhomes. The subdivision of Edgemoor, adjacent to the downtown corridor, is one of the most expensive areas in the County. Likewise, Bethesda condos in the downtown area is all in the luxury category, running anywhere from $600 to $1000 per square foot. Bethesda townhomes, specifically those in Downtown bethesda and are as desirable as they are scarce, with under 100 units total in the entire area.
