Chevy Chase Real Estate
Chevy Chase was unincorporated farmland in the years before 1890, during which time Senator Francis Newlands and his partners began the aggressive acquisition of land in both southern Montgomery County, Maryland and in Northwest Washington, D.C. Their original purpose was the development of a residential streetcar hub for Washington, D.C. The Chevy Chase Land Company was founded in 1890, and its eventual holdings of more than 1,700 acres would extend along what is now Connecticut Avenue from Florida Avenue in D.C. to Jones Bridge Rd in Maryland.
The name "Chevy Chase" was taken from one of the absorbed plots of land. Its name in turn, according to the Village of Chevy Chase's official history, can be traced to the larger tract of land called "Chevy Chace" that was patented to Colonel Joseph Belt from in 1725.
Chevy Chase, Maryland is actually made of up several smaller “villages” and the “town”. In addition to the above, "Chevy Chase" is used for postal addresses that lie in the Town of Somerset and the Village of Friendship Heights, which lie outside historical Chevy Chase.
The commercial/shopping district of Chevy Chase, Maryland is located on Wisconsin Avenue, just inside the D.C. line at Friendship Heights. Here, you’ll find the “Rodeo Drive of the East” with high end shops including names like Tiffany, Saks Fifth Avenue and Cartier…to name a few.
