Top 10 Best U.S. Retirement DestinationsAccording to Portfolio.com, eight out of the Top 10 retirement destinations in the country are in Florida and three out of the Top 5 are in Southwest Florida.

While the warm weather areas dominating the results are no surprise, some of the reports other destinations are quite interesting considering their location.

Here are the Top 10 areas:

  • Prescott, AZ
  • Lake Havasu, AZ
  • Cape Coral-Ft. Myers, FL
  • Naples, FL
  • Palm Bay-Melbourne, FL
  • Homosassa, FL
  • Ocala, FL
  • Punta Gorda,FL
  • Port St. Lucie, FL

Portfolio.com ranked 157 cities across the country using a 6 part formula that included raw Census Bureau data. In addition, this year the popular business journal's report used metropolitan and micropolitan areas with a minimum senior population of at least 40,000 citizens. The study also pinpointed some of the most popular retirement communities based on size or geographic location.

  • Urban Market: Tampa-St. Petersburg, FL
  • Small Market: Prescott, AZ
  • Florida: Bradenton-Sarasota, FL
  • Rest of the South: Myrtle Beach, SC
  • Northeast: Seaford, DE
  • Pacific Coast: Santa Rosa, CA
  • Midwest: Rockford, IL

Honolulu ranked #151 out of 157 markets listed. This is a great place to live - I can understand our low ranking though. The issue is home affordability.

Oahu's median home price in October 2010 was $585,000 and the median condo/townhome price was $315,000. It's not cheap to buy a home here!

However, once you're living on Oahu I think you will like it. I've been here nearly 30 years!

Hey Mike,

I was surprised by its ranking too. I'm sure price is a big part of it, but I also get a lot of comments about "travel time" from my clients that have relocated from there to Florida.

This is a good inexpensive list of cities where retirees can find a cheap home to live and enjoy the nice warm weather. I would say that South Florida would be the best opportunities for investments.
