It's
a known fact that lists sell magazines... just look at any cover of
any personal finance magazine and you will see at least one article
that's a "10 best" or "5 stocks to own now!". But I'm still a
sucker for the ones that rank cities based on quality of life,
education, etc.
So Kiplinger's just announced the 10 Best Cities for the Next Decade and Austin,Texas, ranked first. I completely agree with that decision, even though the fact that Topeka made it on the list calls the whole thing into question.
So here's why I love Austin: First, there are no personal or corporate state income taxes in Texas. I live in California now and the prospect of that makes me salivate like Pavlov's dog. Let's see... live in California and pay heinous state income taxes, or live in Austin and lease an Aston-Martin with the money I was sending to Schwarzenegger every month? Not a tough decision. For personal reasons we can't leave Cali yet but as soon as we can my bags are packed.
Other reasons to pick Austin? Barton Springs Pool, Town Lake (It's never be Lady Bird Lake to me), the best breakfast tacos in America, The Austonian Condos and the Odd Duck Farm to Market Trailer. Of course there's all that data about the educated workforce, good local economy, etc, but I have my priorities. If there's something you love about Austin too please post it in the comments. I make it back there every few months and would love some new insider tips.
