Morristown Council Trying Again To Give Mayor A Raise.
Posted Dec 29, 2007 @ 10:39 am, Viewed by 238 Visitors, Read 240 Times.Once again the Morristown town council is once again trying to give Mayor Donald Cresitello a pay raise. The council has started a new petition in which 5 percent of Morristown's registered voters needed to sign the petition in order for the question to be placed on the ballot.
Many feel that the $6000 a year pay increase for a part-time mayor in a town which claims to be cash strapped is out of line. $6000 would amount to a 23% pay increase as compared to the Morristown public employees who have been getting 3% raises each year.
Much of Morristown's budget comes from property taxes which are trending to be about 40% higher than surrounding Morris Township property taxes. The pay raise being sought for the Morristown Mayor is important because once it passes the Morristown council will use the president to give themselves pay raises as well, and in the end greatly increase the retirement plans that all these people collect for decades to come.

It is a typical New Jersey government type job. They do these jobs not really for the pay, but for the retirement benefits and health insurance benefits they get from them. Most of the people who are in these type of positions are usually held by retired people or independent business people who have some time on their hands. I have heard it said more than a few times that it would be best if the mayor and town council were only allowed to work 2 hours a year.

$6000 a year is a 23% pay increase - how "part time" is this mayor, what is his current salary - that number seems a bit low unless of course he is only working 2 hours a week or something.
