Americantowns.com and others for Morristown New Jersey Local Information??
Posted Oct 9, 2008 @ 8:41 am, Viewed by 749 Visitors, Read 760 Times. As of late there are all these different websites popping up wanting to be your source for information about Morristown New Jersey. Many of these sites are mainly about selling ad space to people such as Morristown REALTORS, and Morristown Mortgage Brokers, and many other businesses in and about town.
To be honest, one of these sites approached me in the early summer asking me to buy the rights to my town. Their deal was $200 to start and then there was a monthly fee. They also had this scheme where they wanted me to go around to different business in town selling them possitions on the site. In exchange for selling these possitions they were offering discounts off of the monthly fees. I thought about it for a bit, and then decided that I would need to pass, considering the large number of different marketing ideas that are pitched to me each month.
I don't think that these websites are all bad, please don't take me the wrong way, I just question the true value of them, since all they really are is a bill board for advertising, with local information scrubbed out of the local news papers.
The main site I am talking about here is Americantowns.com. Have any REALTORS form other areas used this site? Did you find success with it, or is it just like putting your name on shopping carts at the store, all show and no go? Two of my competitors are now advertisers on the site. It will be interesting to see if they keep it up over the long term.

Thanks for the comment Judy, I had 3 different companies with this similar concept trying to get my business during the summer. Even though the site is up and many days showing up in the top 10 for my favorite google search, I still question the value of it.

I'm not sure it was Americantowns that contacted me because there was nothing about selling ad space or an ongoing fee. In fact, the place that contacted me offered free registration on their "site" and I would only have to pay if I wanted an actual ad on their e-mail newsletter.
I did register but haven't gone any further. I mean, how do they get locals to sign up for their monthly newsletters? Their site doesn't show up in top search engine position so how do local people even find the site? I think it's just a way for these promoters to make money and even if a local resident or two found the site I don't see enough value to keep them there, at least not enough residents to give us business.
