Get People Talking about Your Business

Word of mouth marketing (WOMM) -- a strategy in which you engage customers and get them talking about your service or products -- can help grow your business. Here are some tactics for implementing a successful WOMM strategy:

Use incentives to pass the word. A customer who loves your product or service will want to spread the word. Provide them with coupons to pass to other people, or offer them discounts for referrals. Some companies have WOMM elements built into the product, such as free person-to-person calling with people in the same mobile phone plan. This incites customers to recruit friends and family to the service.

Create a community. People like to be around similar people, so create a venue for their interaction, such as product user groups and fan clubs. Use website tools that let customers interact and develop a sense of community. Invite your customers to participate in online discussions about your company, services, products and industry trends. If you write a blog, make sure your customers can comment. This shows them that you value their time and opinions.

Work with influential people. Is there a user group or club that could influence your target audience? For example, if you create computer peripherals, it would make sense to get involved with computer clubs. Also, good-faith efforts to support causes that are important to your target audience can go a long way in capturing new customers.
