Incompetent Agents
Posted Nov 18, 2007 @ 11:08 am, Viewed by 216 Visitors, Read 216 Times. What happened to the professional service provider? Teachers are now "educators"! Auto mechanics are "service technicians"! Real Estate Agents are ...frankly I don't know what, but as a group we certainly aren't service oriented, competent and professional.
Maybe I've just had a bad week, or month, but it seems to me that it is time for our industry to go back to the attributes of a professional. I came up with an old list in my files:
ATTITUDE of SERVICE,honest, genuine, integrity, PUNCTUAL, decisive, motivated, FOCUSED, HARDWORKING, positive, GIVING, responsible, intelligent, COMMITTED, OPTIMISTIC, KNOWLEDGEABLE, DISCIPLINED
You might highlight a diferent set, but few can argue that many of our peers fall short on many of these attributes.
In our company we have men and women ranging in age from 21 to 65. With a fairly even spread across that range and about an even mix of male and female. We also have an interesting mix of races. I am constantly amazed at the diversity of attitudes even among this tight group most of whom were personally trained by me, but what truly amazes me is the apparent incompetence of the community that we work within. Agents who have few communication skills, agents who place their commission ahead of their client's needs, agents who simply don't know the business, agents who have no tools.
I actually don't seem to have the solutions, but it felt good to vent a little bit. I would be interested to have your observations in this vein.

Hi Annie, We close between 300 and 400 transactions per year. I get involved in about a third of them. I find that getting the license doesn't take much. Keeping it is what amazes me. Thanks for the input. Good luck in 2008. It will be a great year for professionals!
Jim, in my opinion most agents have been gobbled up by the large firms who give them no guidance, very little support and only the illusion they are working for themselves. For the most part these agents have no good role models and no experienced agent willing to mentor them. With the technology we have today I strongly believe the small team or family orientated brokerages will proliferate and be very successful over the next 5 years. Julie Jalone MagnumOne Realty
Hello Julie, we have plenty of agent candidates, but we are at the company size that we feel comfortable with and only take on replacements for movers and retirees. Some of the franchises are like the elephant's grave yard. That's where to good agents go to die. At least they are good until they stop learning. Others have a canned training program without first hand support. On the other hand and in opposition to your opinion, we have many very small one and two person brokerages here in the Austin area and they seem to be the least current, most opinionated and precedurally antiquated of all. I believe that professionalism includes keeping up with legal and procedural issues as well as ethics and morals.

I could not agree with you more. I have gone through several deals and have been left with the feeling of "How did this guy/girl get their license?". What happened to providing the best service you can? I guess the silver lining is that it sure makes the good ones stand out from the rest...
