When you live or visit the Austin area, you will be amazed by the numerous things you can do in this great city that are absolutely free to enjoy.  Not only are these attractions free, they are very enjoyable and are considered by many residents to be “must-see” sites when visiting the Austin area.

Texas State Capitol

Whether you live in Texas or not, the Texas State Capitol complex is a site to behold.  The building is actually taller than the US Capitol and was restored in the 1980s.  From the inside out, the complex is absolutely beautiful.

Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library and Museum

The Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library is the largest Presidential library in the United States.  It is also the most visited of these libraries and is home to a number of important papers and memorabilia from LBJ’s presidential term.

Sixth Street

6th Street is free to visit, but you may spend a bit of money if you do more than just window shop.  6th Street is the most well-known street in Austin and is located only a few blocks away from the Capitol.  Here, you will find plenty of bars and restaurants to enjoy as well as a number of live music venues.  In addition to the restaurants, the street is also filled with amazing architecture as well as historic facades.

Lady Bird Lake (formerly known as Town Lake)

Lady Bird Lake, which is along the Colorado River, is found in downtown Austin.  Here, you can engage in a number of fun activities.  These include bat-watching, picnicking, walking, biking, canoeing, attending concerts, riverboat riding, peddle boating, and more.  Spending time at the lake is 100% free, though you may have to pay for some concerts or for taking boat rides.

Congress Avenue Bats

If you really want to get a good look at the bats in Austin, you must visit Congress Avenue.  I you stand on the Congress Avenue bridge in the evening, particularly during the summer and in the early fall, you can witness up to 1.5 million Mexican freetailed bats as they leave the crevices of the bridge.  The bats can be found living in the bridge for approximately 8 months out of the year and, when they leave, they form an enormous black cloud that is quite a site to behold.

Not only are each of these places a great place to visit in Austin, you don’t have to pay a single cent to enjoy them.  If you are just visiting the Austin area, you can enjoy a low-cost vacation or, if you live in Austin, you can visit these sites as often as you like!
