A Look at the Austin, Texas Area

The Greater Austin area consists of five counties and manages to create a fine balance between business services, technology, government, and education.  Of its 1.5 million residents, nearly half are between the ages of 18 and 44.  As such, the median age for Austin residents is actually four years less than the national median.

Austin Education

Austin offers a number of outstanding educational opportunities.  The city boasts eight colleges and universities, which provide educational services to more than 118,000 students.  In addition, Austin is known for being a very well-educated city.  In fact, approximately 43% of the adults living in the city have at least a bachelor’s degree.

Austin’s public school system is also quite massive.  In all, the city has 29 public school districts as well as 17 charter schools and 69 private schools.  Four of the public Austin school districts, which account for 54% of the enrollment in the area, have been included in Expansion Management magazines list of high-quality schools and two of the districts earned a gold medal in educational performance.  In 2007, fifteen of the regional schools were included in Newsweek’s “Top of the Class” list.

Having Fun in Austin

Austin also has a number of recreational opportunities available to its visitors and residents.  This includes having access to ballets, symphonies, operas, dance companies, theaters, and more.  There a number of Austin art galleries and museums that can be explored.

There are also plenty of outdoor recreational opportunities available in Austin.  The Highland lakes, for example, provide plenty of opportunities for activities such as sailing, waterskiing, boating, rowing, windsurfing, fishing, canoeing, swimming, and more.  The city also has over 14,300 acres of land devoted to its extensive system of Austin parks where residents and guests can enjoy mountain biking, hiking, and more.

Austin also features a number of golf courses.  With its rolling hills and its temperate climate, it is the ideal location for golfing.  In all, there are 26 golf courses located in Austin, with five of them being municipal, 13 being public, and seven being private courses.  Among the designers that have created these courses include Tom Fazzio, Arnold Palmer, Crenshaw, Robert Trent Jones, and Kite.

With its active music scene, excellent school systems, and abundant availability of recreational opportunities, Austin is certainly a great place to live.
