In 1982, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center was founded by Lady Bird Johnson. The nonprofit center was designed to help promote and preserve plants that are native to Austin.
Mabel Davis District Park
The Mabel Davis District Park is the first skate park to be developed in Austin. The park features both streetscape and skate bowl elements as well as a playscape, an Olympic size swimming pool, and a picnic area.
Mount Bonnell provides plenty of hiking and climbing opportunities. The 785 foot limestone hill offers panoramic views of Lake Austin and downtown Austin.
Town Lake
Town Lake, which is located in downtown Austin along the Colorado River, is a very popular spot for residents to enjoy recreational activities. Activities available at Town Lake include picnicking, biking, walking, peddle boating, canoeing, bat-watching and more. Concerts are also frequently put on at Town Lake and visitors can stop to see Treaty Oak, which is a live oak tree that is more than 500 years old and is the last surviving tree to have provided shelter to the Tonkawas and Comanches.
Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve
The Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve is a 224 acre sanctuary in West Austin where guests can enjoy encounters with animals, birds, and native plants. Native species can be found on the preserve, which is wheelchair accessible. Special weekend and night tours are available.
Boerne Cascade Caverns
Located just three miles south of Boerne, the Boerne Cascade Caverns features a 100 foot waterfall. Guided tours of the caverns, which are a comfortable 68 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year, are available.
